THE BULLS FOR AND AGAINST
Tuesday, 9 January 2018
AFC MANSFIELD 2 - 1 BARTON TOWN
The Bulls won the game in the 2nd half for the 2nd week running with Cameron Dear providing the all important winning goal again.
Dear came on for Nick Guest in the 1st half after the striker had suffered a dislocated knee. Thankfully it popped back in straight away and Nick will not have such a long layoff as previously thought.
Despite having the lions share of play The Bulls found it hard to break a resolute Barton defence down. Things got worse when Ben Flowerdew found the back of the net from a Callum Terrell layoff on 26 minutes. Guest then had to be replaced and the home side went in at half-time 1-0 down.
Statistics will prove that AFC Mansfield score a lot of their goals in the 2nd half as their opponents begin to flag. That proved the case in this game, with the pressure mounting Fraser Papperill headed an own goal past Sam Riches off a Connor Smythe free-kick to bring the teams level on 67 minutes.
Three minutes later and Dear had put the home side in front, driving the ball past Riches after a superb through ball from Phil Buxton.
The Bulls created several chances after this and the scoreline could have looked a lot more comfortable. But in the final minutes Barton could have nicked a point when a cross from the left found a Barton head but went wide of the target.
